I specifically focus on waste electrical wires in my designs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recycling is part of my life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability has always been important to me and part of my life &#8211; as I grew up with my uncle owning a recycling plant in Romania.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, while researching for a sustainability project at college, I learned that discarded electricals are one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<section id=\"lab_video-block_76d39c5b2a972fed0ecdd356fda037e3\" class=\"o-section lab_video-embed lab_video\">\n\t\t<div class=\"m-preloader\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"m-loader\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bounce1\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bounce2\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"bounce3\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"container container-small\">\n\t\t\t<h3><\/h3>\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"lab_video-embed-container lab_video-embed-container--square\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Designer Alexandra Sipa talks to the Recycle Your Electricals campaign\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J8kSdVML17k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Broken headphones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that time my headphones broke. So instead of throwing them away, adding to this waste stream, I wanted to find a way to reuse them and put them to better use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking my headphones apart, I discovered how colourful all the wires were and came up with the idea of creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk\/?page_id=13655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dress made solely of old electrical wires<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inspired by lace-making<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My designs are inspired by the intricate works of my grandmother\u2019s doilies back in Romania and I adopted the technique of bobbin lace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the yarn &#8211; in my case wires &#8211; are looped and twisted together to create stunning patterns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first I sourced all the materials I used from a recycling centre in London. But more recently due to lockdown I\u2019ve had to find them online through Facebook Marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Taking apart my headphones, I discovered how colourful the wires were &#8211; and came up with the idea of creating a dress made of old electrical wires&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spotlight on waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through all the garments I make I hope to address the issue around waste electricals and bring it to people\u2019s attention more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The partnership with the Recycle Your Electricals campaign will spread greater awareness of this &#8211;
